A Unique Alaskan Place

Kodiak is a rare place in Alaska.  It has stunning forests, beautiful beaches, vast wilderness areas, the biggest brown bears on earth, and yet it gets relatively few tourists.  Cruise ships rarely come here, which means that visitors come to Kodiak on purpose, not on route to somewhere else.  Most of the tourists come for fishing and hunting.  The tourism infrastructure is big enough to ensure great lodging and meals, but not so big as to feel artificial.  One person we encountered on a trail asked where we were from, and when we said "Albuquerque," she said "Oh, you're here for green therapy."  Yes, quiet, green, blue and bear therapies.
